Everyone talks about AI coding tools making engineers faster. Less talked about: what happens to review.

The generation step got dramatically cheaper. The judgment step did not. When one side of a pipeline speeds up 10x and the other side stays human-speed, the bottleneck does not disappear. It moves, and it lands on the people you can least afford to burn out: the senior engineers who can actually tell good code from plausible code.

The failure mode is already visible on teams shipping with heavy AI assistance. Diff volume goes up. Review depth goes down, because no human maintains real scrutiny across triple the throughput. Approval becomes a formality, and the defect rate quietly climbs back to where it was before the tools, except now the defects are confidently written and uniformly styled, which makes them harder to spot, not easier.

I felt this firsthand running my own multi-app platform with AI in the loop. The answer was not reviewing harder. It was restructuring what review means. Mechanical verification moved into gates that run before any human looks: types, tests, contract checks against consumers, security baselines. The human review layer narrowed to the questions machines cannot answer: is this the right change, does it belong here, what does it break conceptually, would I want to maintain this. And the volume through human review is throttled deliberately, because unread approval is worse than slower shipping. It is the illusion of a safety net.

The teams that will get compounding leverage from AI are the ones redesigning their verification pipeline with the same energy they put into adopting generation. The ones that only adopt generation are accumulating risk at a faster rate and calling it velocity.
