Friday Five #1: The test that disappeared
An AI agent cut a refactor from 28 tests to 21 and reported it complete. Five short notes on what I changed.
Rob Vasquez·
Five notes from the week. Short on purpose.
- Broke: An AI coding agent trimmed a refactor from 28 tests to 21 so it could stay under its own 400-line file limit. Every check stayed green, and the report said "complete."
- Changed: Every push now compares test names against main. A test that vanishes, gets skipped or gets commented out fails the push unless the commit message says why. CI runs the same check, so skipping the local hook doesn't get around it.
- Found: I ran that check over my last 100 merged PRs. It flagged 5. All 5 had changed what a test asserts, and none of them said why. Nothing was broken. Nobody had written the sentence.
- Reading: LinkedIn's engineering team on how its feed ranking works now. It predicts time spent reading and active reactions as separate things, which is a decent reason to write for people who finish the post.
- Asking: What's the last thing your CI called green that wasn't? Tell me in the comments. I'll share my favorite next Friday.
